On November 19, 2011, Chris Gorman was elected a Trustee on the Board of Education for School District No. 23 (Central Okanagan) where he serves as Vice-Chair (June-December 2012), Chair of the Finance and Legal Committee, Member of the Planning and Facilities Committee, Member of the District's Safe Schools Committee, and the Board's representative to the BC Public School Employers' Association (BCPSEA). Along with his wife, Chris resides in Kelowna where he and Elizabeth raise their two young children, Isabelle (4) and Naomi (1). Chris has extensive work and volunteer experience in education management, business, politics, and not-for-profit organizations. Passionate about education management, Chris began working at The University of British Columbia in senior administrative roles after completing his Master of Business Administration degree. He currently is Director of Professional Programs at UBC’s Faculty of Management. While working at UBC, Chris also published a column in The Daily Courier entitled “The Bottom Line.” “The Bottom Line” addressed important local issues, pushing them to the forefront of public debate. Prior to joining UBC, Chris served as Executive Assistant to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Honourable Peter MacKay. In this role, Chris had the opportunity to experience and learn about global issues from the vantage of international gatherings such as the meeting of G8 Foreign Ministers, the Organization of American States General Assembly, and the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America. Chris’ private sector experience includes working in various roles within the international shipping and insurance industries in Canada and the United States. Committed to community service, Chris serves as treasurer of his daughters’ daycare, is an active member of the Kelowna Chamber of Commerce, and serves as a board member of the UBC Alumni Association. He also has served for ten years as an elected representative on the UBC Senate, the academic governing body of the University. Through the experiences these roles have afforded, Chris has developed an ability to bring clarity to complex issues and to navigate and acknowledge a wide range of perspectives. He has developed an appreciation for process, an understanding of public policy and advocacy, and most importantly, a capacity to make decisions based on the public interest. Completing his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and History at UBC, Chris went on to earn a Diploma of Technology in Business Administration from the British Columbia Institute of Technology and a Master of Business Administration from the Sauder School of Business. He also studied Law at the University of Ottawa and French at l’Université du Quebec à Chicoutimi. Chris looks forward to serving Kelowna and the Central Okanagan with leadership, energy, and a fresh perspective. |
