          Dear neighbour,

          I’m so proud to live in Kelowna, arguably one of the best places in the world to raise a family.  And this is one of the reasons why my wife and I chose to raise our two daughters (aged 4 and 1) in the Central Okanagan.

          As someone deeply committed to public service, I expressed during the campaign that I wanted to give back and make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.  Being part of the Kelowna community has greatly enriched my life and I would like to contribute to our collective future.

          This is why I feel so fortunate that Kelowna residents elected me to serve as their representative on the Central Okanagan Board of Education.  I am humbled that so many expressed their confidence in my candidacy on November 19, 2011.  Thank you Kelowna!

          It is my belief that quality public education is a pillar to maintaining and building a strong and prosperous society.  Our young people become responsible, productive citizens in part due to an excellent K-12 education.  Our children and grandchildren will be enabled or constrained to shape their future by the decisions we make today.

          Over the next three years, the Board of Education will address important issues that will shape the future for our children and community.  These include:
          • Advocating for sustained and predictable Provincial funding;
          • Refreshing the strategic plan that sets the operational and management priorities for the School District;
          • Reviewing the facilities plan to meet the needs of students today and in the future;
          • Identifying approaches to sustained improvement to graduation, literacy, and numeracy rates;
          • Addressing the facilities challenge in the Upper Mission and the much needed upgrade of Rutland Middle School; and
          • Developing a plan and implementing it to ensure the 21st Century Learning Initiative rooted in personalized learning is poised for success.

          These are not small issues nor small responsibilities.

          If Trustees make good decisions today, current and future students will be able to explore, discover, and expand their minds and experiences.  This will open windows of opportunity for their future – whether it is entering the workforce, pursuing higher education (university or trade school), or embarking on world adventures.

          Because of your support, I am able to address these issues and assume these responsibilities.

          If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me by email at cgorman@sd23.bc.ca or by phone at 250.575.1664.

          Sincerely yours,
